Got woken up at 3 a.m. by the most ungodly screeching and screaming and whimpering. I could tell that it was coming from the close-by tree next door, but at that hour, I wasn't about to go out in the yard and find out what it was.
In the morning, when I looked, there was a raccoon jammed into a notch of the huge maple next door, with Lulu the pit bull circling the tree and barking and trying her best to climb the tree. The whimpering I heard was her frustration at not being able to reach the coon.
We went out for the afternoon and when we returned, the coon was gone, hopefully not to return any time soon.
I had forgotten just how vocal a coon can be when threatened or threatening.
