We have some new birds in the pond by our Raintree site this year; Hooded Mergansers. There is a small flock of 7 birds who swim back and forth and dive in synch. I was hoping for a male, for his gorgeous head, but they are all females.

Cute little things, aren't they?

The males do look splendid. I hope to you get to see one too.

I have just checked. After the breeding season the males moult and look like females, except for their yellow eyes.

Don't know if I can get a pic close enough to see all of their eyes. Has the breeding season passed yet?

They nest in early spring, but apparently they only winter in Florida, so perhaps not in breeding condition yet.

I will keep an eye out. I have seen the males in other parks; it probably was later in the year. My pic may be of a bevy of females waiting for the males!
