My brother has friends in WA state who have a cabin way up in a National Park (grandfathered in). They have electricity, running water (always running, coming from a pipe fed into a stream on the hill); they heat it by running it through a pipe in the wood stove. It's very peaceful and can be handed down to their children some day. We cooked planked salmon over a bed of wet alder leaves that we picked ourselves.
Some bun picks: the first two are of a bun in our back yard who was sheltering in my garden during the hot days. The next bun is on the FL front lawn of my old boss and the last bun is on the WA state front lawn of my brother and sis-in-law.
We had a very nice visit with my brother and sis-in-law in WA state. Toured Wild Horse Wind and Solar Power Facility outside of Ellensburg.....
As you can see, we had to wear helmets and goggles for the tour. We were in White Bird turbine; if you contribute to a charity, you get to name the turbine. Our guide told us that it takes 15 minutes to climb to the top (harnessed and attached to a cable for safety) and that the rectangular part on the top is the size of a school bus. I asked him about bird kills and he said the towers kill about 2 1/2 birds each per year. But the hawks and falcons have learned to use the wind pressure to give them more speed to attack things on the ground! Adaptive learning. The 250 odd towers there produce enough power for 250,000 homes. When the winds are too strong, the turbine will turn the blades out of the wind to prevent bending. It was very interesting!
Well, we're that much further North now that shorts and sandals are but a memory. After 6 days/nights of rain, one night of which had us sheltered under an overpass with 3 other cars, as we couldn't see the road. On our last day in N.C. we visited Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, which is being built and should be finished next year. We got an in-depth tour at the warehouse where the 'gigs are refinished/remade.
Vollis; he worked until he died in 2013 at the age of 94.
those things on the rims are milkshake cups
Sam, who works with the 'gigs and gave us the tour
